In the quiet, early morning hours of January 11, 2026, a tragedy unfolded in an Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Lowe's parking lot that would cut short the life of 15-year-old Katen Elizabeth Atwell. Believed to be safely at home by her parents, Katen had instead met up with a 15-year-old friend and 21-year-old Bryan Harbison. The get-together, fueled by alcohol that Harbison later admitted to purchasing for the underage girls, took a fatal turn.
While sitting in Harbison's truck, Katen was
shot in the chest. Despite Harbison's attempts to render aid, she was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after. The events leading up to the shooting are muddled by conflicting stories. The 15-year-old suspect told authorities that Harbison had placed a handgun on the center console and assured her it was not loaded. Conversely, Harbison claimed the firearm was secured in his glove compartment and that the teen took it without his knowledge. He stated that he and Katen were in the backseat when the shot was fired.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement arrested both individuals who were with Katen. Her 15-year-old friend was charged with murder. Bryan Harbison, from McDaniels, a Breckinridge County man, faced charges of wanton endangerment and unlawful transaction with a minor. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. The investigation revealed that Harbison had met the two girls on Snapchat and believed Katen was 18 years old.
Katen was a student in the Hardin County school system and a member of the Antioch Christian Church at Willisburg. Her family, who described her as a loving sister who adored country life and big trucks, was left shattered by the sudden and violent loss. The community and her school district mourned with them, offering counseling and support to students grappling with the tragic event. Funeral services were held the following Saturday, and in accordance with her parents' wishes, she was cremated.
