On August 19, 2024, a tragic incident occurred outside the Hardin County Justice Center in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, resulting in the deaths of 37-year-old Erica Riley and her 71-year-old mother, Janet Riley. The shooting happened in a parking lot across the street from the courthouse shortly before 9 a.m., just before Erica was set to attend a hearing for an emergency protective order against her boyfriend, 46-year-old Christopher Elder.
