Erica Danielle Riley, a 37-year-old female from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, was fatally shot on the morning of August 19, 2024, in a parking lot outside the Hardin County Justice Center. She was at the courthouse for a scheduled hearing to seek a restraining order against her boyfriend, 46-year-old Christopher Elder. Court records indicate that Riley had filed for the restraining order on August 8, citing abuse over the previous 18 months, including instances where he had allegedly struck her in
the jaw and head multiple times.
On the day of the hearing, witnesses reported seeing Elder circling the area before what police described as an 'ambush-style assault' just before 9 a.m. Elder opened fire, killing Erica Riley at the scene. Her 71-year-old mother, Janet Riley, who had accompanied her to the courthouse, was also shot and later died from her injuries. A third family member was also shot and was reported to be in stable condition. Family members later stated that Elder had been sending threatening text messages to the family.
Following the shooting, Christopher Elder fled the scene, leading to a police chase that ended in Christian County. After a 90-minute standoff with law enforcement in a church parking lot, Elder died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital in Tennessee. Elder had a previous domestic violence case on his record from 2006.
