On a tragic Monday morning, August 19, 2024, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, 71-year-old Janet Riley was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Hardin County Justice Center. She was at the courthouse to support her 37-year-old daughter, Erica Riley, who was also killed in the attack that unfolded as an ambush. Erica's father was also shot and injured during the incident but survived.
The family was at the justice center for a scheduled hearing to extend an emergency protective order that
Erica had obtained against her ex-boyfriend, 46-year-old Christopher Elder. Witnesses reported seeing Elder circling the courthouse parking lot before the victims arrived. Just before 9 a.m., as the family prepared to enter the building for the hearing, Elder opened fire on them.
