In the early morning hours of December 3, 2025, a violent tragedy unfolded in the quiet residential streets of Kansas City, Missouri. Just before 1:30 a.m., local police officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Hardesty Avenue following a distress call requesting an ambulance for an unresponsive individual lying on the ground. Upon arrival near the intersection of East 25th Street and Hardesty Avenue, first responders discovered a 27-year-old male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds on
the sidewalk. Despite the rapid response of the Kansas City Fire Department paramedics, the victim had already succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified the victim as Jerome Anthony Hawkins Jr., a young man known affectionately to his friends and family as "Bullet." His death marked the city's 130th homicide of the year. Born in 1998, Hawkins had overcome significant personal challenges in his life, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia during his college years at Missouri Western State University. He was remembered as a resilient and athletic individual who had been an honors student at Blue Springs South High School. At the time of his death, he had recently earned a manufacturing certification and was active in his faith community at the First Regular Baptist Church. The loss was particularly poignant for his family, as his father had also lost his life when Hawkins was just a toddler.
As of the days immediately following the shooting, the investigation remained active with no suspects in custody. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting, but no arrests were immediately made. Police publicly urged anyone with information to contact the homicide unit or the TIPS Hotline, offering a reward for tips leading to an arrest, as the community and grieving family were left seeking answers for the sudden violence that claimed Hawkins' life.
