Dion Charles Marshall Sims-Bey, an 18-year-old male from Kansas City, Missouri, died after a triple shooting on June 11, 2026, at an apartment complex in the 9200 block of Old Santa Fe Road in south Kansas City, near East 93rd Street and north of Bannister Road. Police were called shortly after 5:15 p.m. after gunfire broke out at the apartment building, turning an ordinary Thursday evening into a homicide scene.
When officers arrived, they were directed inside the apartment building,
where they found 17-year-old Rontez Donahue suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers and emergency responders tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims were also found with gunshot injuries. Sims-Bey had suffered life-threatening wounds, and another teenage boy older than 16 was wounded but was expected to survive.
Sims-Bey was rushed to an area hospital after the shooting. For a short time, he remained one of the wounded victims in what had first been reported as a shooting that left one teenager dead and two others injured. By Saturday, June 13, hospital staff notified Kansas City police that Sims-Bey had died from his injuries, making him the second person killed in the shooting. Gun violence memorial records also listed him as having been lost to gun violence on June 11, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri, and noted that Rontez Donahue was also killed in the same incident.
Police said an adult male suspect was located at the scene and taken into custody for further investigation. Early reports did not publicly identify that person by name, and available reporting did not confirm formal charges, a court filing, a trial, or a conviction connected to Sims-Bey's death. Kansas City police also said detectives were not searching for any additional suspects, suggesting investigators believed the person taken into custody at the scene was the only person of interest known publicly at that stage.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to collect evidence and gather witness statements. Authorities asked anyone who had been in the area, heard or saw anything, or had information about what led up to the shooting to contact Kansas City homicide detectives or the anonymous TIPS Hotline. As of the available public reports, the motive had not been released, and the case remained centered on the shooting at the Old Santa Fe Road apartment complex where Donahue died immediately and Sims-Bey later succumbed to his injuries.
