On the evening of December 12, 2025, a violent incident unfolded in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska, claiming the life of 18-year-old male Darren Greer. Officers from the Omaha Police Department were dispatched to the area near North 61st Street and Bedford Avenue around 9:04 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Greer suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Two other individuals at the scene also sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The investigation revealed that three male subjects approached the vehicle where Greer was located. According to police reports, two of the individuals brandished firearms and discharged them into the car, striking the occupants. Greer, a recent high school graduate who had completed his studies in May 2025, was identified as the primary victim of the fatal assault. The brazen nature of the attack in a residential area prompted an immediate and intense response from local law enforcement homicide detectives.
Authorities have since made multiple arrests in connection with the homicide. A 14-year-old male was taken into custody and charged with murder; a judge subsequently ordered him to be held without bond. Additionally, 19-year-old Cashmere Burus was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, possession of a stolen gun, and tampering with physical evidence. A third suspect, identified as 18-year-old Barry Burus, is also facing murder charges related to the case. Court proceedings began shortly after the arrests, with prosecutors outlining the coordinated nature of the shooting during initial hearings.
