On the day after Christmas in 2017, a holiday gathering in Omaha, Nebraska, turned into a scene of unimaginable violence, leaving 70-year-old John Dalton Sr., a Black male, and two of his family members dead. The tragic events unfolded at Dalton Sr.'s home where family had gathered. What should have been a festive time was shattered when his son, John Dalton Jr., arrived.
Without warning, Dalton Jr.
began shooting, firing through the front door and striking his mother, 65-year-old Jean Dalton. He then forced his way inside and continued his deadly assault. John Dalton Sr. was shot five times by his son. The violence didn't end there; Dalton Jr. then turned his weapon on his 18-year-old niece, Leonna Dalton-Phillip, who was hiding in a closet. Another young niece, only six years old at the time, was also present in the house but managed to survive by hiding under a couch. She later identified her "Uncle JJ" as the shooter.
Following the horrific events, John Dalton Jr. fled the state. A manhunt was initiated, and he was apprehended the next day in Jackson, Tennessee. This was not Dalton Jr.'s first brush with the law for a violent crime. Years earlier, in 1998, he had killed his wife, Shannon Dalton. He served 11 years in prison for manslaughter in that case and was paroled in 2010. His parents, John Sr. and Jean, had raised his three daughters after their mother's death.
John Dalton Jr. pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his father, mother, and niece, as well as multiple weapons charges. By pleading guilty, he avoided a potential death penalty sentence. He was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison, plus an additional 230 years, ensuring he would never be free again. While family members and prosecutors were left searching for answers, a clear motive for the devastating rampage was never fully explained, with the acts being described as "pure evil" by the chief deputy county attorney.
