On December 2, 1977, off-duty Douglas County Deputy Sheriff Charles Edward Dobbertin, aged 41, was driving near downtown Omaha, Nebraska, when he noticed a man acting suspiciously near a delivery truck. Suspecting a theft in progress, Deputy Dobbertin intervened, leading to a confrontation during which the suspect struck him in the face with a radio antenna, seized his service revolver, and shot him.
