On the evening of December 16, 2025, the Sherman Heights neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, was disturbed by a violent confrontation that resulted in the loss of a long-time resident. Eddie Dean Jemison Sr., a 72-year-old African American man well-known for his morning walks and visits to the local corner store, became involved in a heated argument with another individual on Burrell Street. The dispute escalated rapidly, leading to gunfire around 6:20 p.m.
When officers from the Birmingham Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Jemison lying in the roadway, suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel transported Jemison to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Back on Burrell Street, the unidentified male shooter did not flee; instead, he remained at the scene and was promptly taken into custody by responding officers. He was initially held at the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour felony extension while homicide detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation.
In the days following the shooting, the investigation took a decisive turn. After reviewing the evidence and witness statements, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the shooting justified, determining that the actions taken by the other man fell within the bounds of self-defense. Consequently, no criminal charges were filed against the shooter. The community, including the congregation at Rushing Springs Baptist Church where Jemison served as a deacon, was left to mourn his sudden passing, remembering him as a devoted family man who had lived a life rooted in faith and service.
