On a late summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 49-year-old Lafontae Dejarris Lenard, a Black / African American male, was cut short in a burst of violence. On September 2, 2024, officers were called to an apartment in the Tittisville neighborhood in the southwestern part of the city, where they discovered a grim scene. Inside the residence, Lenard had been fatally shot, and three other individuals were found suffering from gunshot wounds.
The initial investigation suggested the incident was a home invasion.
The tranquil Labor Day holiday was shattered for the victims, who were reportedly playing cards when the shooting erupted. The violence of that evening left one man dead and three others fighting for their lives, sending shockwaves through the local community. The Birmingham Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation, working to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter and to identify those responsible for the brazen act of violence that had claimed a life and endangered several others.
Within days, the investigation led to a significant breakthrough. Birmingham police identified a suspect, Tyler Reed Sanders, and took him into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Sanders, who was also injured during the incident, was apprehended and held under police guard while receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Following his release from the hospital, he was formally charged with the murder of Lafontae Lenard and two counts of attempted murder for the injuries sustained by the other victims. Sanders was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail, with his bonds totaling $120,000. The case against him is now pending in the judicial system, as the family and friends of Lafontae Lenard await justice.
