In the Mauldin area of Greenville County, a tragic event unfolded on the afternoon of Monday, October 13, 2025, leading to the death of 17-year-old Juan Pablo Cuartas-Paez, a Colombian-born male. The incident occurred at his family's residence on Creektop Court, where an altercation escalated into violence. Just after 3 p.m., deputies from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office responded to several 911 calls reporting a shooting.
Upon their arrival at the home, they discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds.
Both victims were rushed to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial for medical attention. Tragically, Juan Pablo Cuartas-Paez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:53 p.m. that same day. The other victim, who was also shot at least once, survived the attack. The Greenville County Coroner's Office publicly identified Cuartas-Paez the following day. An obituary later confirmed his age and Colombian birthplace, noting that he was learning to be a barber and had a passion for music, dancing, and working out.
The investigation into the shooting quickly progressed, and by the evening of October 15, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of four suspects in connection with the homicide. Two adults, 19-year-old Adicson A. Gutierrez Martinez and 21-year-old Yeremy D. Lopez Lopez, were taken into custody. They face serious charges, including murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and conspiracy. Both Gutierrez Martinez and Lopez Lopez were denied bond.
In addition to the adult suspects, two juveniles were also arrested. The younger individuals were charged with conspiracy and accessory to the crime.
