On the morning of March 6, 2023, Ja’Twasean Arveil Pierce, a 29-year-old Black man from Greenville, South Carolina, made his way to a unit at the Parkins Ridge Townhomes on Ridge Road, where several people had gathered inside. The visit came just after daybreak, around 7:30 a.m., as the residential complex was starting to stir for the day. Neighbors later awoke to the sound of emergency vehicles converging on the property, unaware that the commotion marked the final moments of
Ja’Twasean’s life, cut short by gunfire in his own community.
Inside the townhome, a group of roughly eight people was present when Ja’Twasean entered. What began as a gathering quickly turned volatile; investigators would later describe an altercation that broke out between Ja’Twasean and one or more individuals inside the residence. In the confined space of the home, the confrontation escalated until shots were fired. Moments later, first responders arrived to find Ja’Twasean suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead there, his death later formally ruled a homicide caused by those wounds.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity and noted that he lived at the home, underscoring that the violence unfolded not in some anonymous location, but at a place tied to his daily life. An autopsy was scheduled to document the extent of his injuries and to preserve evidence for investigators. Outside, patrol cars and crime-scene tape transformed the modest townhome into a focal point of a homicide investigation, while residents watched from a distance as officers moved in and out of the building.
Police later said that when Ja’Twasean walked into the residence that morning, the people already inside became witnesses to the deadly dispute. Authorities reported that there had been a fight leading up to the shooting, and that one person was taken into custody shortly afterward. At the time, investigators described the case as active and ongoing, and they did not release the suspect’s name or further details about potential charges. In subsequent public reporting, there have been no widely documented updates identifying the person in custody, outlining specific criminal counts, or describing any trial or conviction connected to Ja’Twasean’s killing, leaving the broader public record of accountability in his case incomplete.
Away from the crime scene, Ja’Twasean’s death reverberated through his family and among friends who knew him by the nickname “Pudgee.” Obituaries and memorial pages noted that he was born in 1993 and that his life bridged communities in South Carolina and Virginia. He left behind two young sons who carry his name, a devoted mother, siblings, grandparents, and a large extended family who described him as someone who loved them “with all of him.” A memorial service was held on March 15, 2023, at Mimms Funeral Home in Richmond, Virginia, where mourners gathered to celebrate his life, share memories, and try to find some measure of peace after a sudden act of violence that offered few public answers about why it happened or who, in the eyes of the courts, would ultimately be held responsible.
