In the spring of 1921, a veteran police officer in Greenville, South Carolina, met a violent end while in the line of duty. George Staples Burroughs, a 48-year-old male officer with 12 years of service to the Greenville Police Department, was killed on May 6, 1921. His death occurred while he was responding to a domestic disturbance call on Westfield Street.
