In the early morning hours of January 10, 2020, a planned robbery in Greenville, South Carolina, escalated into a violent exchange of gunfire, ending the life of 25-year-old Jalen Takis Mayes. The fatal incident unfolded at Piney Mountain Park on Worley Road, where Mayes was shot. He was quickly transported to North Greenville Hospital in Travelers Rest but succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a complex and tragic series of
events that also resulted in the death of 21-year-old Shunqavious Boyette Fisher. Fisher was discovered deceased in a vehicle at the Azalea Place Apartments, less than a mile from where Mayes was shot. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office determined that the two shootings were connected, stemming from a single altercation.
According to authorities, the incident began as a planned robbery. An 18-year-old woman, Halen Mullinax, was arrested in connection with the case. Investigators stated that Mullinax drove Mayes to Piney Mountain Park with the intent to rob a group of people in another vehicle, which included Fisher. During the attempted robbery, Mayes, who was wearing a mask, approached the other vehicle and held a gun to an individual's head. That person, who was also armed, shot Mayes. Mayes then returned fire, fatally wounding Fisher.
Halen Mullinax was taken into custody and charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon and criminal conspiracy for her role in the events that led to the two deaths. Following her arrest, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office announced that they did not anticipate any further charges in relation to the incident, considering the case resolved with Mullinax's apprehension.
