In the winter of 2015, the life of 16-year-old Cobey Lee Smith was tragically cut short in Greenville, South Carolina. On the evening of Sunday, January 25th, witnesses reported hearing someone call out to the young man near his home at 200 Clark Street. Cobey walked toward the voices, which emanated from a wooded area near the Sliding Rock Creek Trail. Shortly thereafter, multiple gunshots shattered the evening quiet.
It was his own mother and brother who, upon hearing the shots, discovered his body.
For six years, the case of Cobey's murder remained cold, a persistent source of pain for his family and the Greenville community. His mother, Betty Smith, never gave up hope, regularly contacting the Greenville Police Department for updates on her son's case. Community activists also worked to keep his memory alive and continued to press for answers. The persistence of both the family and investigators eventually paid off, leading to a major breakthrough in the investigation.
In April 2021, the Greenville Police Department announced the arrests of three suspects in connection with Cobey's death. Javion Deonte Sanders, who was 19 at the time of the incident, along with Christopher Lewis Dindy Jr. and Tahleigh Rayquan Johnson, both 17 at the time, were each charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. At the time of their arrest, two of the suspects were already incarcerated on other charges. Notably, Tahleigh Rayquan Johnson was also facing charges in a separate double homicide case in Spartanburg County.
Investigators revealed that Cobey had been lured into the woods by the suspects, though a clear motive for the premeditated act has not been publicly established. While it is believed the suspects knew of Cobey, a direct relationship was not specified. The arrests brought a sense of closure to a family and community that had waited years for justice. All three individuals were arraigned and held without bond.
