On a tragic Mother's Day morning in Greenville, South Carolina, David Whittington Oliver, a 44-year-old White male, was shot and killed while riding his bicycle. The incident occurred on May 9, 2021, near Rocky Slope Road and Sedly Road, just a short distance from his home. Known as 'Whit' to his friends and family, Oliver was a beloved figure in the Greenville cycling community and a former professional cyclist who had competed in Europe.
At approximately 11 a.m., Oliver made a 911 call
to report that he was being harassed. During this call, he identified his assailant as Jeffrey Mark Murray, a 62-year-old man from Greenville. Dispatchers then heard gunshots over the phone. Witnesses at the scene were able to provide police with a description of the suspect and his vehicle, which aided in a swift search.
Shortly after the shooting, police officers located Murray's vehicle. When Murray exited his vehicle armed with a firearm, a confrontation ensued, and he was shot and killed by the officers. Both Oliver and Murray were pronounced dead at Prisma Health - Greenville Memorial Hospital.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure. Meanwhile, the Greenville Police Department handled the investigation into Oliver's murder. The officers involved in the shooting of Murray were placed on administrative duty.
