In the summer of 2022, the life of 31-year-old Joshua Matthew Garrett, a White/Caucasian male from Greenville, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. On the evening of July 3rd, in the Poe Mill area of Greenville County, Garrett was found with a fatal gunshot wound to his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene in front of a residence on A Street.
Those who knew him remembered a kind-hearted man who was always ready to lend a hand to someone in need, a quality that makes the circumstances of his death all the more poignant for his grieving family and community.
The Greenville County Sheriff's Office launched a thorough investigation into the shooting, gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of three suspects. In the days following Garrett's death, authorities announced the arrests of 18-year-old Seth Tyler Norris, who was apprehended in Greenville County, 24-year-old Tristan Wesley Ramey, who was located and arrested in Jacksonville, Florida, and 41-year-old Sunny Michele Sorgee.
Norris and Ramey were both charged with murder, with Ramey also facing a charge of criminal conspiracy. Sorgee was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony. As the legal process began, Norris and Sorgee were held without bond in the Greenville County Detention Center, while Ramey awaited extradition from Florida back to South Carolina to face the charges against him. The swift arrests brought a small measure of relief to a community shaken by the violent loss of one of their own.
As the case progressed through the justice system, a disturbing series of related crimes came to light. While investigating Garrett's murder, detectives with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office discovered videos showing Seth Norris and his brother, Joshua Norris, brutally attacking several homeless individuals. This discovery added a new and unsettling dimension to the case. In September 2025, Seth Norris entered into a plea agreement. In exchange for pleading guilty to the lesser charge of accessory after the fact in the murder of Joshua Garrett, as well as assault and battery for the attacks on the homeless, fourteen other charges against him were dismissed. He was subsequently sentenced to 12 years in prison. His brother, Joshua Norris, had received a deferred sentence the previous year and was out on bond awaiting the final determination of his sentence.
