In the early hours of an October morning, the life of 29-year-old Devonte Redmond, a male resident of Columbia, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. On October 15, 2025, multiple calls to 911 reported gunfire at the Columbia Gardens Apartments on Plowden Road. When Columbia Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 1:30 a.m., they found Redmond unresponsive in an outdoor area of the complex. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Despite the officers' immediate efforts to perform CPR until emergency medical services arrived, Redmond succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Richland County Coroner's Office.
The investigation into Redmond's death led to the arrests of three teenagers weeks later. Authorities identified 18-year-old Mason N. Taylor as the individual who allegedly shot Redmond. He faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Two other 18-year-olds, Daquan D. Macon and Jalil R. Medlock, were also taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting.
According to police, Macon and Medlock were present during the shooting but did not intervene or report the crime. Macon is charged with misprision of a felony and accessory after the fact to murder, with accusations that he failed to report the shooting, disposed of the weapon, and assisted Taylor in leaving the scene. Medlock faces a charge of misprision of a felony for allegedly being present and not reporting the crime. All three suspects were booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting.
