In the summer of 2022, a tragic event cut short the life of a Columbia teenager. Jaylin Michael Randall Lee Wilson Mosby, a 16-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on Sunday, July 31, 2022. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of Shorecrest Drive, near Bluff Road and Interstate 77. When Richland County sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Jaylin had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
Jaylin, affectionately known as 'My Boy,' was a rising junior at Dreher High School. He was described as a loyal and nurturing individual who enjoyed playing video games, basketball, and football, and cherished spending time with his family and friends. Poignantly, the day before he became a victim of gun violence, he had attended a 'Stop the Gun Violence Rally.' His family remembered his playful side, his charming smile, and his strong sense of justice.
The investigation into Jaylin's death moved swiftly. A few days later, the Richland County Sheriff's Department announced the arrest of a suspect. Tahkel Wilson, 17, was taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with Jaylin's death. Wilson was booked into the juvenile wing of the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Authorities did not immediately release information regarding a motive for the shooting or any previous connection between the two teenagers. The investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting is ongoing.
