An autopsy later confirmed that he had died from a gunshot wound to his upper body sometime between October 21 and October 22.

the endearing nickname 'Pippy,' a name that perfectly matched his cheerful and upbeat personality, Sylvester was described as a man who was never down about anything. A proud Army veteran, he had graduated from Lower Richland High School in 1974 before enlisting and serving his country for seven years. A highlight of his military career was serving as an Honor Guard for President Jimmy Carter's inauguration in 1977. In his later years, he continued to find joy in helping others, volunteering his time in the kitchen at the Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His daughter, Olivia, remembers him as a man who was always bringing smiles to people's faces.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into Sylvester's death. Investigators at the time believed that the killing was not a random act of violence, speculating that he was likely familiar and comfortable with the person who took his life.
