On July 10, 2023, 27-year-old Stephen Wilson was walking along Lester Drive when he crossed paths with Jaylon Veerapen. Investigators believe the two men were acquainted and engaged in a short conversation before the situation escalated with tragic consequences.
Richland County Sheriff's Department deputies were dispatched to the 3800 block of Lester Drive around 11 p.m.
following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Wilson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate medical attention provided by the deputies, Stephen Wilson succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting continued for over two weeks, culminating in the arrest of 20-year-old Jaylon Veerapen on July 26, 2023. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. While authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting, they have indicated that they believe Wilson and Veerapen knew each other prior to the incident. Veerapen was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, and the sheriff's department has stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
