On May 10, 2021, 15-year-old Desmond Williams, a male, and his 17-year-old friend, Reginald Nixon Jr., were at the Madison Station Apartments on Ulmer Road when gunfire erupted. When Columbia Police officers arrived at the sprawling apartment complex shortly before 11 p.m., they found a chaotic scene. Reginald Nixon Jr.
was pronounced dead at the scene, having succumbed to his injuries where he fell. Desmond Williams, still clinging to life, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he too passed away from his wounds. The Richland County Coroner’s Office would later confirm that both deaths were homicides.
In the immediate aftermath, the Columbia Police Department began an intensive investigation into the double homicide. They canvassed the area, speaking with residents of the Madison Station Apartments in an effort to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
