The events that led to Officer DeLong's untimely death began with a response to a domestic disturbance call on Holstein Lane. A woman reported that a man, against whom she had a restraining order, was at her home causing damage. By the time DeLong arrived, the suspect had fled, but the victim provided a description of the man and his vehicle. A short time later, while on patrol, Officer DeLong spotted a man and a vehicle matching the description at Southeast Park on Hazelwood Road. He initiated a call for a suspicious person and requested backup. When his fellow officer, David Dymock, arrived on the scene, a confrontation ensued, and both officers were shot. Tragically, Officer DeLong succumbed to his wounds at the scene, while Officer Dymock was injured but survived.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as 33-year-old Adam Dowdy of Prosperity, South Carolina, the same man from the earlier domestic disturbance call. Dowdy, who had a long and varied criminal history spanning multiple states, was also killed during the exchange of gunfire. His criminal record included convictions for disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, public intoxication, and possession of a controlled substance. As the suspect died at the scene, there were no subsequent arrests, trial, or sentencing in this case. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting was handed over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, a standard procedure in such incidents. In the wake of this tragedy, the Columbia community mourned the loss of a hero, and Officer DeLong was posthumously promoted to the rank of lance corporal in recognition of his service and sacrifice.
