In the quiet evening of February 22, 2015, in Columbia, South Carolina, the life of 17-year-old James Edward Nathan Jr. was tragically cut short. The young man, known to his friends and family as 'Jay,' was the victim of a drive-by shooting on Windy Drive. When Richland County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene around 9:45 PM, they found Nathan with gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Despite the efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the male teenager quickly pointed towards a grim reality of street violence. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced that the shooting was not a random act but a calculated and retaliatory strike between rival gangs. Within a month of the fatal shooting, four suspects were apprehended and charged with the murder of James Edward Nathan Jr. The individuals arrested were identified as 23-year-old Xavier Brannon, 19-year-old Alvin Anderson, 21-year-old Tyshon Anderson, and 19-year-old Varn Smith.
