A simple honk of a car horn at a green light on a Friday afternoon in Indianapolis led to the shooting death of 21-year-old Kentrell Settles. On October 17, 2025, Settles was driving with his girlfriend near the intersection of West 38th Street and Georgetown Road. When the traffic light turned green and the car in front of him did not move, Settles sounded his horn before driving around the stopped vehicle.
This everyday act of mild impatience enraged the other driver, who then began to follow him.
The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Deborah Benefiel, pursued Settles' car down Georgetown Road and onto Donald Avenue. Witnesses reported Benefiel shouting and gesturing at Settles before she fired at least one shot into his vehicle. The bullet shattered the back window and struck Settles in the chest, passing through his lung and heart. His girlfriend, who was in the car with him, was unharmed but witnessed the entire event. She drove him to her parents' home nearby seeking help. Responding officers found Settles in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the senseless killing moved swiftly. Within a few hours of the shooting, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives identified Benefiel as the suspect, utilizing witness information and the city's license plate reader technology to track her SUV. Authorities located her at a gas station, where she and her mother were allegedly attempting to remove identifying stickers from the vehicle. A subsequent search of Benefiel's residence on East Washington Street uncovered a handgun.
Deborah Benefiel was arrested and charged with murder and criminal recklessness. During her initial court appearance, a judge ordered her to be held without bond and prohibited any contact with Settles' girlfriend. Friends and family remembered Kentrell Settles as a kind and beloved young man with a bright future, expressing their heartbreak over his tragic and unnecessary death.
