On a summer afternoon in Norfolk, Virginia, the life of a young Black woman visiting from out of state was tragically cut short. Erica J Wright, a 22-year-old female from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was shot on July 10, 2025. The incident occurred around 2:10 p.m. in the 900 block of Bagnall Road. After being shot, Wright was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
The Norfolk Police
Department swiftly launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to a suspect, 23-year-old Shaiqui M. McKesson. He was taken into custody in the neighboring city of Virginia Beach. Authorities have not yet released a motive or the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. The investigation appears to have moved quickly, resulting in an arrest not long after the incident.
Following his arrest, Shaiqui M. McKesson was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held without bond at the Norfolk City Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. While an arrest has been made, the community is left mourning the sudden and violent loss of a young life, as detectives continue their work to piece together the events of that tragic afternoon.
