In the summer of 2014, a tragic event unfolded in Norfolk, Virginia, ending the life of 8-year-old Katharine Renai Mihok. On July 23, 2014, young Katharine died from a gunshot wound in a heart-wrenching murder-suicide. An investigation revealed that her mother, Karla M. Mihok, was the perpetrator, taking her daughter's life before ending her own. Due to the suspect being deceased, the case was closed.
Katharine was remembered as an energetic and happy female child who found joy in the
simple pleasures of life. Her obituary paints a picture of a little girl who loved to throw kisses in the air, pose for pictures, and explore the outdoors. She had a passion for dancing, swimming, and going to school. As a Girl Scout, she took pride in earning badges and enjoyed visiting with people. Above all, she cherished her family, especially her older sister. A joint celebration of Katharine and her mother's lives was held on July 28, 2014, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Norfolk.
