In the late summer afternoon of Friday, August 22, 2025, the sound of gunfire shattered the peace on the 200 block of Roosevelt Parkway in Jackson, Tennessee. When police arrived just after 1:30 p.m., they discovered 22-year-old Sherman Mays suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather a targeted attack on
the young man. Over the weekend, detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their investigation pointed them toward a single suspect: 19-year-old Michael Hunt.
By Monday, August 25, authorities had located and taken Hunt into custody on unrelated charges as they continued to build their case in Mays' death. The following day, the Jackson Police Department formally announced that Michael Hunt had been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Sherman Mays. His arraignment was scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, August 27, in Jackson City Court. While a motive for the shooting was not immediately released, the investigation remains ongoing.
