In the warm evening of Memorial Day, a day typically marked by remembrance and community gatherings, tragedy struck in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. On May 26, 2025, Amya Devlin, a 23-year-old Black female, was among a crowd on Lemon Hill Drive when gunfire erupted shortly before 10:30 p.m. The sudden violence of that night left a devastating toll on the community.
Amya, affectionately known as 'Mya' to her loved ones, was a cherished daughter and a fierce protector of her eight
sisters. Described as the heart of her large family, her loss created an irreplaceable void. In the chaos of the mass shooting, she was one of eleven people struck by bullets. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Amya was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead. Another young life, that of 21-year-old Mikhail Bowers, was also claimed in the incident, and nine other individuals, ranging in age from 15 to 28, sustained injuries.
In the days that followed, family and friends gathered to honor Amya's memory with a balloon release at Pleasant Hill Park in Northeast Philadelphia. The sea of balloons floating into the sky was a testament to the love and light she brought into the world. Her mother, Ryan Brunson, remembered her daughter as someone who would be deeply missed by all who knew her. The investigation into the shooting revealed a complex and chaotic scene, with police believing as many as six different firearms were discharged. Despite the number of people present and the scale of the incident, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an unsolved and painful chapter for the city of Philadelphia, leaving a family to mourn and a community to seek answers and justice for Amya Devlin.
