In the early morning hours of June 26, 2025, a dispute inside a 7-Eleven in Philadelphia's Tacony neighborhood turned deadly, claiming the life of 55-year-old Tyrone Brown, a Black/African American man. The incident, which unfolded around 7 a.m. at the convenience store located on the 6900 block of Torresdale Avenue, escalated from a verbal disagreement to a physical altercation.
The argument took a fatal turn when the other man involved, identified as Joseph McGinnis, 43, pulled out a
handgun and shot Brown in the head. Police arrived to find Brown with a gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene just minutes later. The entire altercation and shooting were reportedly captured on the store's video surveillance.
Following the shooting, McGinnis fled the 7-Eleven and returned to his home on the 7000 block of Tulip Street, just a few blocks away. A 911 call led police to his residence, where he had barricaded himself inside. A standoff ensued, and after a short time, McGinnis was taken into custody by police shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Authorities later charged McGinnis with murder and various weapons offenses in connection with the death of Tyrone Brown. The swift arrest came after an investigation that included witness statements and a review of the video evidence from the convenience store.
