In an apartment in northwest Oklahoma City, a day of youthful innocence turned into a tragedy. On a Sunday afternoon, July 6, 2025, three-year-old Kenari Windom, a Black male child, was in a bedroom where adults were present. One of them, 22-year-old Anthony Lawrence Grizzard Jr., was reportedly dating the roommate of Kenari's mother and was occupied with a video game. Beside him on the bed lay a handgun he owned.
The curious toddler managed to get ahold of the firearm.
The weapon discharged, a single shot striking Kenari in the abdomen. He was privately rushed to a local hospital, where medical staff immediately took him into surgery. Despite their efforts, the young boy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident, which occurred in an apartment on Stratford Drive, marked the 40th homicide in Oklahoma City for the year.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Grizzard fled the scene. However, his freedom was short-lived. He was located and taken into custody the following day by law enforcement. After being interviewed by detectives, Anthony Lawrence Grizzard Jr. was booked into the Oklahoma County jail. He faces complaints of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. Investigators have described the shooting as accidental, a devastating consequence of a loaded weapon left accessible to a small child.
