In the early hours of a Sunday morning, the life of 31-year-old Bennie Simmons, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Oklahoma City. The fatal encounter unfolded on April 2, 2023, in the parking lot of an event center located at 1148 NE 36th St. Police were called to the scene at approximately 1:55 a.m. in response to a disturbance.
Investigators learned that a dispute had broken out between Simmons and at least one other individual in the parking lot.
The argument escalated, leading to a shoot-out that left Simmons with fatal injuries. Emergency services responded, but Bennie Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days following the shooting, the Oklahoma City Police Department appealed to the public for assistance in the investigation. They released a video of the incident, which showed a shoot-out involving several people, in the hopes that someone would recognize the individuals or vehicles present.
