In the winter of 2017, the life of 39-year-old Donielle Gregory was tragically cut short in what would become a grim chapter in Midwest City's history. On the evening of January 28th, Gregory, a male, was at the home of a man named Ramon Pugh on East Babb Drive. He was not alone; two other men, Derell Barksdale and Terrance Jackson, were also present.
The atmosphere in the residence, where the men had been watching television, eating, and drinking for several hours, would soon be shattered by the eruption of gunfire.
Around 8:45 p.m., a witness reported hearing gunshots emanating from the living room of the duplex. When the chaos subsided, a horrific scene was left behind. Donielle Gregory and Derell Barksdale had been shot multiple times. Terrance Jackson, who was described as Pugh's best friend of three decades, suffered a single, fatal gunshot wound. In the immediate aftermath of the violence, the host, Ramon Pugh, fled the scene, leaving a triple homicide in his wake.
The search for Pugh did not last long, as he turned himself in to the Oklahoma County Detention Center on February 3, 2017. The legal proceedings that followed would stretch on for over six years. Initially, prosecutors sought the death penalty for Pugh, a charge that was later dismissed. During his trial, Pugh claimed that he had acted in self-defense, asserting that he believed Gregory and Barksdale had come to his home with the intention of robbing him. However, this claim was undermined by the fact that none of the three victims were armed.
In September 2023, a jury found Ramon Pugh guilty on three counts of First-Degree Murder. They recommended a life sentence for each of the men he killed. In addition to the murder convictions, Pugh was also found guilty of Possession of a Firearm After Former Conviction of a Felony, which added another 20 years to his sentence. The prosecution highlighted Pugh's actions after the shooting, noting his failure to render aid to the victims or call for emergency services. Instead, he attempted to dispose of the murder weapon and destroy his phone. On October 16, 2023, Ramon Pugh was formally sentenced to three consecutive life terms for the murders, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life in prison for the events of that tragic January night.
