On a warm evening in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on May 22, 2022, a tranquil horseback ride turned into a scene of violence that ended the life of 22-year-old Laneko S. McMahan. A Black and Muscogee citizen, McMahan was riding with a friend near the intersection of Northeast 41st Street and Lenox Avenue when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 8:59 p.m.
in a rural area on the eastern edge of the city.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, McMahan’s friend acted quickly, getting him into a private vehicle to rush him to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite these efforts, McMahan was pronounced dead at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Midwest. The sudden and violent nature of his death left his family and community in shock.
Oklahoma City Police Department officers responded to the scene, launching a homicide investigation into the shooting. Investigators learned that McMahan was simply riding his horse when he was struck by gunfire. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in the case, and no arrests have been made.
