In the early hours of a Sunday morning in St. Louis, Missouri, 16-year-old Octavius Tay Harris, a promising male student and track athlete, was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 3:20 a.m. in the 900 block of O'Fallon Street. Harris was in a car with three other teenagers when two individuals opened fire on their vehicle. Harris was pronounced dead at the scene, while two of the other occupants, a 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and
were transported to a local hospital in stable condition. A fourth individual in the car was unharmed.
According to a preliminary investigation by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the teenagers were driving away from a party they had attended nearby when the shooting occurred. However, Harris's mother, Makailu Harris, stated that her son was not at a party. She explained that he had been at his aunt's house, which was near the scene of the shooting, and had left with his twin sister, their aunt, and a friend to get snacks. His mother recounted that she had seen him just ten minutes before he was killed. She described her son as a straight-A student and a dedicated track runner who was about to enter his junior year at East St. Louis Senior High School. He was the oldest of six children and had taken on a protective role in his family after his father's death in 2018.
The St. Louis police have not yet identified any suspects in the shooting, and no arrests have been made. Homicide detectives are actively investigating the case and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
