On a late summer afternoon in Modeste, Louisiana, a dispute over parking fees at a trail ride event escalated into a fatal encounter for Brandon Cayette, a 40-year-old man from Donaldsonville. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, August 2, 2025, near the Sportsman Lounge on Highway 405, ended with Cayette being shot multiple times. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Authorities from the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the location around 5 p.m.
following reports of a shooting. Their investigation revealed that an argument had broken out among several individuals concerning paid parking for the event. The altercation intensified between Cayette and another man, identified as 43-year-old Anwar McKenney of Zachary. The two men, who were known to each other and had grown up together, were arguing when McKenney allegedly shot Cayette.
Following the shooting, McKenney fled the scene. However, he was later located by deputies and taken into custody for questioning. During the interrogation, McKenney admitted to detectives that he was the one who had shot Cayette during their altercation.
Anwar McKenney was subsequently arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. He is facing charges of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
