In the late hours of a September evening in Ruston, Louisiana, the life of 35-year-old Ontario Spivey, a male resident of the city, was tragically cut short. On September 4, 2025, Spivey was fatally shot at a convenience store located at 2500 West Alabama Avenue. The incident prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the Ruston Police Department, setting in motion a chain of events that would lead to a dramatic multi-state pursuit.
Utilizing video surveillance from the
convenience store, investigators were quickly able to identify a suspect and the vehicle he was driving. With the assistance of a Grambling Police Officer who recognized the individual, authorities identified Virgil Mack, Jr., 31, of Dubach, as the primary suspect in Spivey's death. This crucial identification allowed law enforcement to issue an alert for the suspect and his vehicle to surrounding agencies.
The investigation took a turn towards a high-speed chase when the suspect's vehicle was detected traveling westbound on Interstate 20. A Louisiana State Trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, leading to a pursuit that crossed state lines into Texas. The chase ultimately concluded when the suspect's vehicle crashed in Marshall, Texas.
Following the crash, three individuals were taken into custody by Texas authorities. The primary suspect, Virgil Mack, Jr., was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Ontario Spivey's death. Two other men were also apprehended: Kobe Ty'rell Mack, 20, also of Dubach, and Kourtney Douglass, 37, of Ruston. Kobe Mack faced charges of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder, a misdemeanor probation violation, and a bench warrant for failure to appear in court. Kourtney Douglass was held in Texas on a charge of felony evading arrest or detention by vehicle. After extradition proceedings, Virgil Mack Jr. and Kobe Ty'rell Mack were booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
