In the early morning hours of July 20, 2025, a tragedy unfolded in a triplex on West Sun Street in Morehead, Kentucky, culminating in the death of 15-year-old Luis Jocsan Nanez Lopez. The male teenager, who was about to begin his sophomore year at Rowan County Senior High School, was fatally shot when he intervened in an assault on his mother. His sister was also shot and critically wounded during the incident.
The alleged assailant was identified as Gildardo Amandor-Martinez, his
mother's 36-year-old boyfriend. According to authorities, Martinez was attempting to sexually assault Luis's mother when the teenager stepped in to protect her. In the ensuing violence, both Luis and his sister were shot. Law enforcement responded to a report of the shooting at approximately 2:30 a.m. and found the two teenagers with gunshot wounds. Luis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following a brief search of the area, police located and arrested Gildardo Martinez. He was subsequently charged with murder, first-degree assault, and attempted rape and is being held at the Rowan County Detention Center. It was later revealed that Martinez is a Mexican national who had entered the United States without authorization. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has since placed a detainer on him, indicating their intent to take custody of him if he is released from local custody.
