In a tragic turn of events on June 5, 2025, 22-year-old Marcus Cunningham Jr. was found shot to death inside an apartment at the Autumn Trace Apartments on Rocky Creek Road in Macon, Georgia. The Bibb County Sheriff's Office responded to a call and discovered Cunningham unresponsive with a gunshot wound. His father, Marcus Cunningham Sr., remembered his son as a vibrant, funny, and respectful young man who was deeply connected to his family.
The investigation into Cunningham's death quickly led to multiple arrests. Within a month of the shooting, four individuals were taken into custody and charged with murder. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Keino Shantez Bibbs, 35-year-old Alfonso Hyman, 17-year-old Darrell Stanley, and a 16-year-old whose name was not publicly released due to his age. Stanley was apprehended in the neighboring Jones County following a traffic stop. Hyman and the 16-year-old were both arrested at residences in Macon.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a surprising development. The 16-year-old suspect was acquitted of all charges against him in October 2025. These charges included malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and first-degree home invasion, suggesting the incident may have been a home invasion gone wrong. The cases against the other three suspects, Bibbs, Hyman, and Stanley, are still making their way through the court system. The Bibb County District Attorney's Office has refrained from commenting on the ongoing prosecutions.
