In the late hours of a Wednesday night in March 2014, the life of 26-year-old Sanchez Robinson was tragically cut short in Macon, Georgia. He was discovered shot in the driver's seat of his Dodge Charger at the Chambers Pointe apartment complex on Chambers Road. The Bibb County coroner pronounced him dead at the scene just before midnight on March 26th.
The news of his death sent a shockwave of grief through his family, with his mother, Regina Smith, describing the shooting as 'senseless.'
Sanchez was on the brink of a new chapter in his life; he and his girlfriend, Mercedes Thomas, were expecting their first child in August of that year. He was excited about becoming a father and was convinced they were having a boy. His loved ones remembered him as a man with a wonderful spirit and a kind heart, whose life was taken far too soon. The loss was deeply felt by his parents, siblings, grandmother, and his companion, who were left to mourn a future that was stolen.
The day after the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Sanchez's death. Dequantez Shuntae Harris, a 24-year-old, was taken into custody by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office. A witness reported seeing a person exit the rear driver's side door of Sanchez's car and flee the scene. Harris was subsequently charged with malice murder, possession of a firearm, and armed robbery. He was held in the Bibb County jail without bond.
In the years following her son's death, Sanchez's mother, Regina Smith, became an advocate against violence in the Macon community. She organized a prayer march called 'Save Our City' to bring awareness to the senseless violence that took her son's life and to offer support to other families who have experienced similar tragedies. She expressed that while she is still angry, she has found it in her heart to forgive and hopes to create a platform for others to voice their pain and begin to heal.
