In the early hours of a December morning in Thomasville, Georgia, a dispute at an apartment complex tragically cut short the life of 38-year-old Bryan Johnson. The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on Monday, December 23, 2019, at the Villa North Apartments located on Old Albany Road. Johnson, an Albany resident, was visiting the complex where the man who would later be accused of his murder lived.
Following the altercation, Johnson was rushed to Archbold Memorial Hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his gunshot injuries.
The investigation into the shooting was a collaborative effort between the Thomasville Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Their work quickly pointed to Dontavious Williams, a 29-year-old resident of the apartment complex, as a person of interest. When officers initially attempted to interview Williams in the hours following the incident, he tried to flee. A physical struggle ensued, leading to his apprehension and an initial charge of felony obstruction. At the time of his arrest, Williams already had an outstanding warrant for a separate offense of pointing a gun at another person.
As detectives and GBI agents continued to gather evidence and conduct interviews with potential witnesses, the case against Williams solidified. In early March 2020, while he was already in custody at the Thomas County Jail on the obstruction charge, Dontavious Williams was formally charged with the murder of Bryan Johnson. Authorities did not release specific details about the motive behind the deadly argument or the number of times Johnson was shot. The firearm used in the shooting was also not publicly disclosed as having been recovered at the time the murder charge was announced.
