A simmering dispute at a Nicholasville apartment complex on Edgewood Drive culminated in the shooting death of James Milton, a 31-year-old male. The fatal encounter occurred on the morning of October 2, 2025, following a prolonged verbal dispute Milton had with his girlfriend the previous evening. His mother, Samantha Milton, was also wounded in the incident.
The situation escalated when Milton, who was in the process of leaving the apartment building with his mother, witnessed his
girlfriend entering the apartment of a neighbor, Raekwon Scott, age 24. According to police, Milton then attempted to kick in the door of Scott's apartment. It was at this point that Scott, armed with a handgun, fired shots, striking both James Milton and his mother. Milton was hit at least twice in the chest and was later pronounced dead at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. Samantha Milton sustained a gunshot wound to her arm and was treated and released.
Raekwon Scott, the shooter, remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the Nicholasville Police Department's investigation. He has not been criminally charged, as his account of the events, which indicates he acted in self-defense, is being carefully examined. Police have stated that interviews and a search of Scott's apartment appear to support his version of the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities analyzing evidence in consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office to determine if the shooting was justified under Kentucky law.
