In the winter of 2017, a promising young life was abruptly cut short in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Leo Travers, a 15-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of January 12th. Known for his vibrant personality and love of sports, Leo was a student at East Jessamine High School, where he was a respected and admired friend and teammate. His death sent ripples of shock and grief through the close-knit community.
The events leading to Leo's tragic death unfolded as part of a planned
marijuana transaction. Accompanied by 20-year-old Halie Anglin, who drove him to the meeting point on Garden Park Drive, Leo intended to purchase the substance from 18-year-old Tyler Jeffers. The exchange, however, escalated into violence. According to Jeffers' later admission to police, a struggle ensued during which Leo allegedly grabbed for his pockets. It was then that Jeffers, armed with a handgun, shot Leo twice in the head. The gunfire also shattered the back window of the car Anglin was driving as she attempted to flee the scene.
The investigation into Leo's death led Nicholasville police to Tyler Jeffers, who was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, receiving a stolen firearm, and attempting to sell a controlled substance to a minor. Jeffers initially claimed he did not know Leo, but later confessed to the shooting, stating he acted in self-defense. Further investigation revealed that Jeffers' grandfather, Albert McKinney, had attempted to help his grandson conceal the murder weapon and was also charged with tampering with physical evidence. Halie Anglin faced charges of second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor for her role in driving Leo to the fatal encounter.
In October 2017, Tyler Jeffers pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, as well as the other charges against him. The prosecution recommended a 15-year sentence for his role in the death of Leo Travers. The tragic incident left a lasting scar on the Nicholasville community, a somber reminder of a young life filled with potential that was senselessly lost.
