In the autumn of 2001, a dedicated law enforcement officer, Captain Charles Brown 'Chuck' Morgan, Jr., a 51-year-old male, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. The events leading to his death began on the morning of November 13, 2001, in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Captain Morgan, along with Deputy Billy Ray Walls and another deputy from the Jessamine County Sheriff's Office, was serving a warrant for terroristic threatening on an elderly man.
The suspect resided in a small houseboat that was situated on land, resting on barrels. As the three deputies entered the unconventional dwelling, the man inside opened fire with a. 30 caliber M-1 rifle. The sudden and violent ambush resulted in Deputy Walls being fatally wounded at the scene, while Captain Morgan and the third deputy sustained serious injuries. Despite being wounded, the deputies were able to return fire, killing the suspect.
Captain Morgan was critically wounded in the exchange and was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment. After fighting for his life for two weeks, Charles 'Chuck' Morgan succumbed to his injuries on November 28, 2001. He had served with the Jessamine County Sheriff's Department for over ten years. A search of the suspect's houseboat following the incident revealed the presence of over 20 handguns. The suspect was killed at the scene, and no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Captain Morgan and Deputy Walls.
