In the autumn of 2020, a life was tragically cut short in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Mario Walls, a 33-year-old male, was shot in the abdomen on the evening of Tuesday, October 13, 2020, in the parking lot of an apartment building on Beauford Place. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 10:47 p.m. and transported him to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, October 14, 2020.
The Nicholasville Police Department immediately began an investigation into the shooting. With limited initial information about a suspect, officers canvassed the area. A break in the case came shortly before 1 a.m. when an officer encountered a man at a nearby convenience store. The man, identified as 45-year-old Michael Walker, had a handgun visible at his waistline. During the encounter with law enforcement, Walker admitted to shooting Walls.
Walker was taken into custody and initially charged with assault. Following the news of Walls's death, the charge was upgraded to murder. He was subsequently booked into the Jessamine County Detention Center and held without bond. At the time of his arrest, investigators did not believe that Walker and Walls had known each other, and the motive for the shooting remained unclear as the investigation continued. The case was then set to be presented to a grand jury for further legal proceedings.
