In the early morning hours of Friday, August 1, 2025, the life of 49-year-old Hispanic male Ruben Parga-Quintanar of Dodge City came to a tragic end in a north Wichita alley. First responders were dispatched to the 2400 block of North Jeanette around 8:45 a.m. following a report of a man down. Upon arrival, they discovered Parga-Quintanar suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:53 a.m.
Initial investigations into the death of Parga-Quintanar led police to believe he had been shot at a different location and had managed to flee on a bicycle for at least three blocks before collapsing in the alley where he was found by a passerby. However, as detectives delved deeper into the case, the narrative shifted. Evidence eventually suggested that Parga-Quintanar was actually shot within the alley and collapsed nearby. The investigation quickly pointed towards a person of interest.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on Saturday, August 2, when investigators served a search warrant at the home of a suspect. This led to the arrest of 41-year-old Ricardo S. Talavera of Wichita on the following Tuesday. Talavera was subsequently booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. Initially arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, he was later formally charged with involuntary manslaughter and interference with a law enforcement officer.
