In the late evening of August 19, 2025, La'Renzo Shamar Murray, a 22-year-old male, had just completed his shift as a sorter at a UPS facility on the northwest side of Indianapolis. He was sitting on a bench outside the West 81st Street distribution center when his life was abruptly cut short. A person approached him from behind and fired a single, fatal shot into his back. First responders arrived at the scene around 10 p.m. and found Murray in critical condition.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the seemingly senseless act of violence quickly pointed toward a colleague. Several co-workers suggested to police that another UPS employee, 28-year-old Parris Maul, might be involved. The victim himself had expressed a sense of unease about Maul to his girlfriend shortly before the shooting, describing his co-worker's behavior as 'weird' and 'scary.' Although Murray hadn't seemed overly worried, this detail provided a crucial lead for detectives. The motive appeared to stem from previous disagreements between the two men.
Detectives pieced together evidence that placed Maul at the scene of the crime, even though he was not scheduled to work that day. An anonymous tip first directed their attention his way. Investigators discovered that Maul had taken an IndyGo bus to the UPS facility an hour before the shooting. They were able to connect the bus card used for the trip to Maul's personal email address. Furthermore, GPS data from his cellphone corroborated his presence in the area. Security footage captured the suspect, whose face was masked, fleeing the scene after the shot was fired. A warrant for Maul's arrest was issued on September 19, and three days later, he was located and taken into custody. Parris Maul was subsequently charged with one count of murder for the death of La'Renzo Murray and is being held without bond pending trial.
