In the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the life of 19-year-old Laurice D. Pate, a Black male from Indianapolis, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded on the city's east side, in the 100 block of South Gladstone Avenue, near the intersection of East Washington Street and Sherman Drive. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene around 3:30 a.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Laurice D.
Pate with critical injuries from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in an attempt to save his life, but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The Marion County Coroner's Office later publicly identified him.
According to witness accounts provided to the police, the shooting was preceded by a struggle over a firearm. Detectives believe a disturbance involving multiple individuals escalated, leading to the fatal shot. Witnesses reported that after the gunfire, a suspect involved in the confrontation fled the scene in a vehicle, heading north.
As daylight broke, homicide detectives remained at the active crime scene, working to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. They canvassed the neighborhood, speaking with residents and appealing to the public for any doorbell or surveillance video that might have captured the suspect or the fleeing vehicle. At that time, authorities had not made any arrests or publicly identified a suspect in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to seek information from the community to bring resolution to the case.
