In the warm, early morning hours of July 29, 2025, in Valdosta, Georgia, the life of 34-year-old Delvonte Ronterraius McNealy, a Black male, was tragically cut short by a senseless act of gun violence. McNealy, who had ties to Quincy, Florida, was in Valdosta to enjoy time with family members and was attending a gathering at a residence on Frederick Place. What should have been a peaceful occasion turned into a scene of chaos and loss when a vehicle drove by the home and its occupants began firing into the crowd. McNealy was standing near the road when he was struck by multiple bullets to his torso. Despite the immediate efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Valdosta Police Department quickly launched an intensive investigation into the shooting. Detectives and crime scene personnel processed the area, gathering physical evidence and witness statements. Investigators soon came to the conclusion that McNealy was not the intended target of the drive-by shooting. Their around-the-clock work led to a breakthrough within days of the incident.
Based on evidence collected at the scene, detectives identified 19-year-old Michael Eugene Carter as a primary suspect. He was located at his home and arrested with the assistance of a K-9 unit. Carter was subsequently charged with one count of murder, seven counts of aggravated assault, and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The investigation, however, did not end with Carter's arrest. Police Chief Leslie Manahan affirmed that authorities would diligently follow all leads to ensure everyone involved in McNealy's death was held accountable.
Further investigation led to the identification of two more suspects. In September 2025, the Valdosta Police Department announced the arrests of Shayon Edwards and Devonatada Edwards in connection with the fatal shooting. Both were charged with murder. During the arrest of Shayon Edwards, authorities discovered a significant quantity of drugs, including over a pound of marijuana, cocaine, and pills, as well as four firearms and more than $1,100 in cash. This resulted in additional charges of drug and weapons offenses for Shayon Edwards. The case against the three suspects is ongoing.
