In Valdosta, Georgia, on the night of April 11, 2020, a party took a tragic turn, ending the life of 35-year-old Sherrod Leonard, a Black male. The Valdosta Police Department received a 911 call around 10:53 p.m. and responded to the 2400 block of Bemiss Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Leonard deceased from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an altercation that had occurred at the party. Detectives determined that Sherrod Leonard had been involved in a dispute with another individual at the gathering, which escalated to the fatal shooting. The person identified as the shooter was Tonya Alexander, a 33-year-old woman, also from Valdosta. She was taken into custody at the scene on the night of the incident.
Following the initial investigation, Tonya Alexander was formally charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The Valdosta Police Department, with assistance from the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol, worked to piece together the events of that night.
However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn on April 30, 2021. A Lowndes County grand jury returned a 'no bill' against Tonya Alexander for the felony murder charge. This decision indicated that the grand jury did not find sufficient evidence to proceed with a murder prosecution, believing the shooting may have been an act of self-defense. While the murder charge was dropped, the District Attorney's office stated that Alexander would still stand trial for aggravated assault.
